The aims of this module are to :

  • Provide learners with a knowledge and understanding of third level education and its expectations of them as learners in general and open distance learners in particular
  • Develop essay and report writing skills appropriate for academic work
  • Enable learners to use a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which is an essential part of college life
  • Equip learners with the skills and confidence to succeed at Higher Education

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to: 

1. Demonstrate that they can manage their time successfully.
2. Recognize and implement appropriate learning skills to assist them with in their workplace, community and/or third  level education setting. 
3. Engage in Reflective Practise 
4. Understand their most effective learning styles
5. Use  online opportunities for self- directed independent learning
6. Distinguish appropriate styles of writing at Higher Education level
7. Identify the most appropriate academic progression opportunity

This module is sometimes delivered as a stand alone Module. this enables the Learner to have a taster of the the full programme and provides EQUAL Ireland with an assessment tool to help advise the Learner regarding the future. It is recognised as a valuable Module to have completed for any futher education course.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Familiarise the learner with resources for undertaking research
  • Introduce the learner to the importance of language and grammar
  • Introduce the learner to the process of preparing for assessment and examination

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to:

1. Use resources in their workplace, community and educational settings confidently and competently to research a given topic 
2. Formulate a grammatically correct written composition of 300 words1. Articulate the role and purpose of financial management in business and not-for-profit organisations
3.  Design and deliver a 5-minute presentation on a given topic
4. Better present themselves or heir ideas and suggestions either verbally or in written form whether in the workplace, the community or an academic setting

  • Provide the learner with the knowledge and skills in using the basic functions of a computer and its operating system environment
  • Develop a basic understanding of the features of text applications
  • Provide the learner with the skills and techniques to format and manipulate text documents

1. Use Word for typing letters and reports
2. Use Excel for Calculations
3. Use PowerPoint for Presentations
4. Manage and Navigate through  the Desktop File System
